Joseph Capriati brilliantly bares his essence in his first ‘real’ Essential Mix

The Essential Mix has seen no dearth of exceptional techno sets this year. In 2017, BBC Radio 1’s premier dance-focused broadcast has recruited the likes of Adriatique, Pan-Pot, and Monika Kruse (not to mention techno progenitor Robert Hood, who elected to provide a house-focused mix with his daughter, Lyric, as Floorplan). However, despite the rich offerings which Pete Tong’s esteemed program has purveyed over the past six months, this weekend’s Essential Mix may be the most coveted techno offering of the year.

Ringing in June, Joseph Capriati stepped up to the decks at BBC Radio 1 on Friday, June 2. Though the Neapolitan artist has established himself as one of the genre’s preeminent DJs over the past decade, this broadcast marks his first “real” Essential Mix (as opposed to the live-recorded b2b with Adam Beyer which he provided for the program in 2015).

Capriati takes his Essential Mix debut quite literally, stating his intent to reflect his true essence at the beginning of the broadcast. Throughout the course of the mix, the now-Redimension label-head progresses from house, to deep techno, and finally, a conclusion of proper techno. Filled with unreleased tracks from the likes of David Morales and The Martinez Brothers, Capriati’s set is an engaging journey throughout the spectrum of quality club music.

Ranging from Jamie Jones to Patrice Bäumel, the first Essential Mix of June is deftly-curated enough to resonate well into the months when EMOTY nominees begin to be named.
