Good Morning Mix: The ’80s are alive with FM-84’s ‘Ready Player One’-inspired set

When Ernest Cline’s ’80s-reference-packed book, Ready Player One, debuted in 2011, readers knew it was only a matter of time before filmmakers tried to get their hands on the rights to turn it into a major motion picture.

Seven years later, Steven Spielberg released the Warner Bros. feature film. At a SXSW event just weeks before the film hit theaters, Spielberg hosted an event promoting the movie. San Francisco producer FM-84 was tapped to DJ the event and threw it back three decades in a diverse, two-hour set. Throughout the course of the mix, the producer transitions seamlessly from Duran Duran to Lenno to Michael Jackson to The Midnight to Depeche Mode. It’s a 120-minute time capsule, blending some of the biggest hits of the ’80s with tunes from today’s disco and synthwave-inspired artists.
