MTV VMAs hit record-low viewership and ratings in 2018

This year’s MTV VMAs viewership numbers dropped to a record low, breaking last year’s figures.

The Aug. 20 MTV Video Music Awards drew only 4.87 million viewers across eight Viacom-owned channels, compared to last year’s 5.36 million. Also plummeting is the awards show’s rating, which garnered only a 2.2 rating among young adults age 18-49. Last’s year’s awards show had a 2.6 rating.

The 2018 VMAs featured performances by Post Malone, Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande, and more. While dance music was low in representation this year, Avicii and Rita Ora’s “Lonely Together” won for best dance video. Other notable winners were Childish Gambino for “This Is America,” Cardi B‘s “I Like It,” and “Whatever It Takes” by Imagine Dragons.
